Are you Building Your Mental Muscle?
Over the past 20 years of researching some of the most successful people from a wide variety of industries and sports, one common theme continued to pop up. Their ability to focus completely on the task at hand and block out everything else that is going on and completely immerse themselves in what they are doing RIGHT NOW was a common skill that they all possessed.
I call this a skill because it is like any other skill that needs to be developed or any other muscle that needs to be strengthened. I believe training the mind is no different from training the body, with a wide variety of training programs that will help deliver a variety of results and get your body performing at a higher level. Our mental muscle is one of the most important muscles in regards to helping us achieve our absolute best, but unfortunately, I feel that for most of us, we are unconsciously training it to underperform.
Time and time again when I consult for businesses, I see systems and processes that are extremely distracting to the day-to-day performance of individuals but are so often looked upon as just part of the role and a normal part of their working life. Whether it is the distracting pattern of email notifications popping up, fellow staff members walking in to ask questions or the influx of constant phone calls coming in, all of these processes are currently having a very detrimental impact on your ability to achieve a high level of focus.
In today's world, we have taken multi-tasking to new heights, to the point that not only is it extremely unproductive in the workplace, but both unhealthy and dangerous to our lives and the lives of those around us. We have gotten used to the fact that our mind is rarely present on the task at hand and for a lot of us, we have become completely unaware of the impact this "Jumpy" mentality has on our performance both at work and in life in general.
One of the most empowering processes I focus on with teams is to help them understand how to create their own personal productivity systems and processes, that help them to build their own mental muscle and condition their minds to be fully present to the task at hand. The positive impact of this process is quite surprising to them, as they often feel that they are getting twice as much done, in half the time. This pattern of performance has such an empowering impact on staff as they can begin to build a strong foundation of mental muscle in a relatively short period of time with the right strategies put in place.
One of the quickest ways to improve your overall productivity and performance is to take a look at your own personal focus patterns and begin to create an awareness of how your mind functions during the day. If you can begin to fine-tune your mental muscle and improve your mind's ability to focus on the task at hand, you will improve your productivity and as well as help you manage any stress or anxiety associated with your role.
